Michael St. John - Paper Variable 2012

Michael St. John
Baghead, 2012
Pigmented cotton, archival glue, rubber stamp, button
13 3/4 x 8 1⁄2 x 6 inches

Dieu Donné is pleased to announce a new edition by Michael St. John of 25 variable artworks in handmade paper as part of the 2012 Paper Variables program. Baghead continues St. John’s exploration of the power of everyday objects, which inspire a multitude of personal and collective associations in the viewer. In St. John’s edition we may see a handmade toy or a sinister mask; we may recall the lighthearted nostalgia of a school sack lunch or notice a reference to the hooded figures prevalent in Philip Guston paintings, which evoke a similar breadth of possible readings: malevolent, cartoonish, a disguise. As Roberta Smith describes in her New York Times review of the artist’s 2011-12 exhibitionIn the Studio Twenty Eleven at Andrea Rosen gallery: “With the ephemeral as a common thread Mr. St. John slyly fuses trompe l’eoil painting with a small, portable version of installation art”.
