Glenn Goldberg - Paper Variable 2019

Edition 2 of 15

Glenn Goldberg
Under Sky and Water, 2019
Cotton base sheet with pigmented linen blowout and paint
15 x 9 inches

Dieu Donné is pleased to release Under Sky and Water, a new Paper Variables edition by Glenn Goldberg. Working with Master Collaborator Amy Jacobs, the artist created a variable series of 15 unique cotton based pieces with pigmented linen and paint. Each of these pulp paintings integrate abstracted images of birds, dolls, and dogs; elements that are present throughout Goldberg’s work both in painting and print. These characters are offset by soft backgrounds bursting with kaleidoscopes of color.

In the artist’s words: “Generally the pieces are colorful, windswept, quiet and misty and the results have much to do with the natural effects of the use of water and spray; with forms moving about as if they were in an air or river current. The feeling is natural with subtle, enhanced color. After these places and moods were established, living beings and signage were inserted by using paper pulp and a variety of stencils that I prepared. The results are colorful, lively and intentionally gentle in their demeanor.”

About the Artist

Glenn Goldberg was born in the Bronx, studied at the New York Studio School and received a MFA from Queens College. He was named the 1996 Heilman Artist and has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. Goldberg's paintings refer to anti-authoritarian attitudes of the 1970s that brought political and aesthetic movements such as feminist art and pattern painting to the forefront. He states that his paintings "attempt to facilitate the inexplicable." Goldberg has had solo shows at Willard Gallery in New York, Greenberg Gallery in St. Louis, Barbara Krakow Gallery in Boston and Galerie Albrecht in Munich. Goldberg's work is held in numerous collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Academy of Arts and Letters, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
