2025 Papermaking Workshops

Dieu Donné’s 2025 Paper Institute workshops are a series of in-depth, hands-on papermaking courses for beginning and experienced papermakers alike with inspiring guest instructors and Dieu Donné’s studio team.

Scholarship OPPORTUNITIES

We are pleased to offer multiple full-tuition scholarships for each workshop, making papermaking more accessible to students in need of financial assistance.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Past scholarship recipients may apply again.

  • Scholarships are awarded based on both financial need and artistic merit. No papermaking experience is required.

  • Artists who have previously collaborated with Dieu Donné or received awards such as residencies and fellowships are not eligible.

  • Artists from a wide range of cultural and disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

  • Application Deadline: Friday, April 18 by 11:59 am ET

  • Notification by: Late-May, 2025

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

To ensure you have a clear understanding of the 2025 Paper Institute expectations, please review the following:

  • All refund requests for classes must be submitted in writing to dieudonne@dieudonne.org. A $50 fee will be deducted from all refunds to cover credit card processing fees and administrative costs.

    • Full Refunds (minus $50 fee): Requests for refunds made at least 15 days before the first session of the workshop.

    • 50% Refunds (minus $50 fee): Requests for refunds made 7-14 days prior to the first session of the workshop.

    • No Refund: Requests for refunds received less than 7 days before the first workshop session.

    The “first session of the workshop” is defined as the first gathering of students listed in the course description, regardless of whether it is a virtual or in-person session.

    In the event that Dieu Donné cancels a workshop prior to the start date, students will receive a full refund. In the case of an emergency resulting in Dieu Donné canceling an in-progress workshop, students will receive prorated refunds reflecting the amount of lost class time.

  • The physical demands of most workshops include standing for long periods of time, lifting tools and equipment, and the use of fine motor skills. The papermaking studio is an inherently wet space, which can make the environment warm and humid with wet floors. To ensure safety and comfort, rain boots and waterproof aprons are provided to all students.

    Dieu Donné is committed to making our workshops accessible to individuals with disabilities. We are happy to try to make adjustments and accommodations for students requiring specific support.

    Building Accessibility:
    Dieu Donné is located on the sixth floor of Building 3 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The studio is accessible via two passenger elevators, and there is an all-gender wheelchair-accessible bathroom onsite. Wheelchair users will need DD staff assistance to operate the stair lift outside of our building.

  • All students and instructors must be fully vaccinated. Masks are optional but available on-site for anyone who wishes to use them.

2025 WORKSHOP CATALOG

Translation and Process: Blowouts and Stenciling with Alejandra Arias Sevilla

In-studio: Friday, June 27 – Sunday, June 29, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Playing with translucency and texture, students will make connections between material and process to create layered artworks. Students will experiment with blowouts, stenciling and pulp painting to explore the language of mark-making and process, embracing the unique possibilities and variables inherent to papermaking. Over the course of the class, participants will develop foundational papermaking skills and can expect to create a variety of small scale (11 x 14 inches) artworks and experiments. No prior papermaking experience is required.

Tuition: $700.00

  • Alejandra Arias Sevilla (Mexico City, Mexico) is a visual artist and collaborator based in Brooklyn, NY. Arias Sevilla received a BFA in Intermedia from Pacific Northwest College of Art. She was awarded the Undergrowth Educational Print Fund at Mullowney Printing in 2021 and became the Lead Printer from 2022-2023. She was the 2024 recipient of the Marabeth Cohen-Tyler Print/Paper Fellow at Dieu Donné. Her work has been featured in the Oregon Library Association Quarterly, and can be found in the Albert Solheim Special Collection. She has exhibited work at the Print Center New York, Dieu Donné, New York and Stelo Arts, Oregon.

Form and Surface Through Casting with Lee Running

Pre-class Zoom: Saturday, June 28, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm ET
In-studio: Thursday, July 10 – Sunday, July 13, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

In this course, students will explore handmade paper as a primary material for creating sculpture. Paper pulp is a material uniquely suited for three-dimensional work. It can hold surprising detail when cast, and also be flexible, light, and translucent. Starting with pulp preparation and sheet forming, students will learn to create paper forms using plaster and rubber molds, direct casting, and sculptural sheet forming. Both beginner and advanced students are enouraged to explore new ways of working with this versatile material. No prior papermaking experience is required.

Tuition: $850

  • Lee Emma Running is an artist based in Omaha, NE who creates monumental public installations on windows, and arresting objects using cast iron, enamel, glass, bone, and handmade paper. She uses this work to engage audiences in conversations about the impact of human-built systems on the natural world.

    Running has been a Foundry Resident in the Arts/Industry program at Kohler Co. in 2023 and 2024. Permanent installations of her work can be viewed at the University of Nebraska Omaha, The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Bernheim Arboretum in Kentucky. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Kewitt Luminarium, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Kaneko, and the Des Moines Art Center. She has been awarded residencies at Opera Omaha, Western North Carolina Sculpture Park, Ucross, and the Santa Fe Art Institute.

Print/Paper Play: Drypoint on Handmade Paper with Nazanin Noroozi

In-studio: Friday, July 25 – Sunday, July 27, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

In this class, students will work across wet papermaking and drypoint printmaking processes to explore the potential of combining techniques. Students will make handmade cotton and abaca papers using stenciling, pulp painting, and collaging to create evocative and meaningful custom surfaces for printing. We will introduce two printmaking processes, using Tetra Paks and plexiglass plates to create non-toxic drypoint etchings on our handmade paper, which each provide a unique visual language. By layering different processes, materials, and textures, we’ll create layers of meaning and expand the aesthetic possibilities. The focus in this class is on experimentation with the intersection of printmaking and papermaking and learning new techniques. Students can expect to make a series of small scale experimental papers and prints. No prior papermaking experience is required; some experience with intaglio or relief printmaking is recommended.

  • Nazanin Noroozi is a multi-disciplinary artist incorporating moving images, printmaking and alternative photography processes to reflect on notions of collective memory/history, instability and displacement. Noroozi’s work has been widely exhibited at galleries and museums across the world including SPACES, Cleveland (OH), Athopos, Athens (Greece), Golestani Gallery, Dusseldorf (Germany), Immigrant Artist Biennial, Baxter Camera Club NYC, Noyes Museum of Art, NY Live Arts, and School of Visual Arts. She is the recipient of awards and fellowships from New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (film & video), Marabeth Cohen-Tyler Print/Paper Fellowship at Dieu Donné, Artistic Freedom Initiative, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, and Mass MoCA residency. Her works have been featured in various publications and media including British Journal of Photography, Die Zeit Magazine, BBC News Persian, Elephant Magazine, and Financial Times. Her works are in public collections such as the New York Public Library, Harvard Art Museum, Arizona State University and Alfred University. She is an editor at large of Kaarnamaa; A Journal of Art History and Criticism. Noroozi lives and works in New York City, USA.

Intro to Contemporary Papermaking with Cara Lynch

In-studio: Friday, August 1 - Saturday, August 2, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

This two-day workshop offers an introduction to papermaking as a creative medium. Students will learn how to pull sheets of paper, and basic pulp painting, stenciling, and collaging techniques, and have the opportunity to learn about a selection of artworks from the Dieu Donné archive. This class includes substantial open studio time for hands-on creation and experimentation. No papermaking experience required.

Tuition: $400.00

  • Cara Lynch is an artist based between New York and Nashville. Working across media, she is currently making (mostly) paintings, weathervanes, windchimes, and suncatchers. She is a 2020 graduate of the MFA program at Columbia University and received her BFA from Adelphi University in 2012. Recent presentations include Off the Grid at 5-50 Gallery in Long Island City, Pathetic Fallacy at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, and Open Air at the University of Connecticut, Avery Point. In addition to her studio work, she has created many commissioned public works including installations for NYC MTA Arts and Design, NYC Health and Hospitals, Nashville International Airport, and NYC Department of Transportation.
