Dieu Donné is pleased to release Frisket, a new Paper Variables commission by Carrie Moyer. Working with Studio Collaborator Amy Jacobs, the artist created a variable edition of 35 unique pulp paintings with shaped overlays. Through manipulating multiple matrices, each unique work forms a fluid motion of bold color contained within organic contours.

A frisket is a sheet of material, such as paper or metal, used to mask areas of an artwork so that ink is only applied to the exposed areas of the paper. Moyer engages this idea, while also allowing for spontaneous experimentation when applying pigmented pulp. The artist shapes her hand-painted applications with a “frisket”, a second layer of pigmented cotton, masking these underlying bursts of color. Her edition exemplifies the approach Moyer has often taken to her painting. In Moyer’s interview with Ian Barry, released in conjunction with her Pirate Jenny exhibition at The Tang Museum, Skidmore College, the artist describes, “I want [my paintings] to look at first like they are spontaneous...So one aspect of the work is looking back to Color Field painting and the notion of flowing paint as an intuitive gesture. In other words, letting the paint do what is does naturally...”. In Frisket, the artist utilizes her traditional painting techniques - pouring, layering, overlapping translucent pigments, and manipulation of paint through gravity - to create these individual works in paper.
