Dieu Donné is pleased to announce a new edition of unique variants by Eddie Martinez as part of the 2013 Paper Variables program. This playful, cartoonish, and abstract series is comprised of a few basic compositions that each feature a handful of repeating forms. By working quickly and on several pieces simultaneously, the artist was able to explore variation within his themes through different combinations of color, form, embellishments, and positive and negative space. The resulting body of work captures the quick, gestural process which is common in the artist’s large scale paintings.
Using vibrantly pigmented linen paper pulp like paint, Martinez manipulated the medium through layering, painting, and embracing “accidents” such as spillover, drips, and evidence of studio life. The artist was able to quickly and fully translate his own style into the medium of paper pulp, while working in the Dieu Donné wet studio with collaborator Amy Jacobs. Martinez’s natural aptitude for pulp painting achieves the goal of Dieu Donné to introduce an artist to a new medium, provide support throughout the experience, and translate the artist’s practice into a new visual language.
About the Artist
Eddie Martinez lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been exhibited internationally at Saatchi Gallery, London and Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, Moscow, among others. Reviews of his work have been featured in Modern Painters, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and Art in America, and numerous other publications. His work was on view in the solo exhibition Matador at The Journal Gallery, Brooklyn.
