Dieu Donné is pleased to announce a new edition by Lesley Dill of 50 variable artworks in handmade paper as part of the 2009 Paper Variables program. The newest addition to the Collector’s Series portfolio possesses an ethereal atmosphere that is reminiscent of wintery landscapes and the Northern Lights. As the artist explains, the work is very much about the color silver: “As someone who grew up in Maine, silver is often the color of the sky as well as the water as well as the winter ground. I think of this color as a lake of iridescence, an internal place where ideas spring to mind”.
Dill worked closely with artistic director Paul Wong to develop an extremely luminous piece. The project begins by couching a silver-pigmented linen sheet onto a base sheet of blended abaca and kozo. The sheets are pressed, and the exposed silkscreen is registered on top of the sheet. Linen pulp paint is pushed through the coarse silkscreen onto the base sheet of silver, and the sheet is pressed once more and dried. The hand-cut collage element is applied to the completed work.
