2025 Marabeth Cohen-Tyler Print/Paper Fellowship

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP

The Marabeth Cohen-Tyler Print/Paper Fellowship is awarded annually to a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, person of color) or underrepresented printmaking postgraduate or professional printer. Through research and experimentation, the fellow will develop custom papers for different printing methods and explore creative techniques in the papermaking process to enhance imagery.

Kenneth Tyler and Dieu Donné are honored to have established this Fellowship in memory of Marabeth Cohen-Tyler.

This fellowship is by nomination only. Nominations for candidates must come from professional printers and/or graduate school faculty.

FELLOWSHIP BENEFITS

  • Comprehensive Training: 8 months of training in papermaking, including full immersion in Dieu Donné’s collaborative papermaking process. The fellow will gain proficiency in fiber preparation, sheet forming, equipment maintenance, setting up to work with artists, and working collaboratively. Onsite work-study training will take place 3 days a week, leaving 4 days for personal art practice, research, and cultural enrichment.

  • Financial Support: A stipend of $33,000 to enable the fellow to make Dieu Donné their sole commitment during the fellowship.

  • Studio Access: Supported studio time, equipment, and materials to experiment in combining printmaking and handmade paper. Access to Dieu Donné's Charles Brand etching press and Skycut cutting plotter.

  • Visibility: Opportunities to showcase the work and research that result from the fellowship in various forms, including an artist talk and an exhibition of work at Dieu Donné or in a partner exhibition space. Additional opportunities, depending on the fellow’s interests, might include curating an exhibition and/or webpage of artwork and research from the fellowship.

  • Studio Support: Access to the facilities at Dieu Donné for the fellow’s own papermaking practice and research, including several dedicated days in the professional studio with one artistic collaborator to realize larger scale or more complex work than would be possible working alone.

  • Networking Support: Support for building the fellow’s collaborative artistic network. Dieu Donné staff will facilitate meetings with area printshops, master printers, and artists that work in printmaking and handmade paper.

FELLOW RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Printmaking Development: Work with Dieu Donné staff to further develop printmaking on-site with our presses. For example, the fellow might work in collagraph combined with imagery created in the wet papermaking process. The fellow may also wish to set up and experiment with a variety of non-toxic printmaking techniques.

  • Dedicated Presence: Maintain a flexible schedule that allows work on-site at Dieu Donné a minimum of three days per week, as scheduled around artists and projects. Dieu Donné should be the fellow's primary commitment during the fellowship period.

  • Community Engagement: Work to strengthen ties to the NYC printmaking community by visiting other studios and engaging in research on collaborative printmaking and papermaking.
