About the lecture
In this talk, Carolina Larrea—longstanding instructor of papermaking at the School of Arts of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile— will speak to the way Chile has only recently begun building a tradition in papermaking. Larrea will provide insight into the role of papermaking in Chile as a papermaking teacher and artist. She considers the medium to be unique in that it encourages collaboration with nature, and introspection on behalf of the maker through the lengthy process of turning plant fibers into paper and paper-based artworks. Larrea will also speak about papermaking in relation to Geido, a Zen Buddhist philosophy that emphasizes the importance of process in art-making.
