Studio Residencies, Fellowships, & Special Projects
This year, we collaborated with a diverse range of emerging and established artists.
Sam Moyer is the 2024 Lab Grant Resident. This by-invitation residency provides 1 established artist per year the opportunity to work in depth in papermaking.
Howardena Pindell’s multi-year residency with our organization culminated in a solo exhibition at Garth Greenan Gallery titled Inner Space. Pindell worked closely with our expert collaborators to create monumental works made out of thousands of hand-drawn embedded paper dots. Stay tuned for next year’s creations!
Diana Al-Hadid completed her Lab Grant Residency cycle and continues to develop more handmade paper works in our studio.
Alejandra Arias Sevilla was the 2024 Marabeth Cohen-Tyler Print/Paper Fellow. The fellowship is awarded annually to a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, person of color) or underrepresented professional printer. Through research and experimentation, the fellow develops custom papers for different printing methods and explore creative techniques in the papermaking process to enhance imagery.
Lauren Krukowski is the 2024-2025 West Bay View Foundation Fellow. This fellowship offers an immersive studio mentorship for a visual artist. Each fellow studies with Dieu Donné master papermakers, gaining practical experience working in a professional papermaking studio.
Crystal Z Campbell, Jonathan Sanchez Noa, Simonette Quamina, and Ye Qin Zhu were selected as the 2024 Workspace Residency Program artists. This residency provides 4 emerging New York State-based artists per year the opportunity to explore paper as an artistic medium. We also launched the Dual Workspace Residency with Artists Alliance Inc., which provides one artist with a studio-based residency at Artists Alliance Inc., in parallel to the collaborative residency at Dieu Donné.
LaKela Brown, Holly Coulis, and Matthew Kirk each produced their own Paper Variables series as part of Dieu Donné’s annual membership program, raising a robust $50,000.

Public & Foundation Support
In 2024, Dieu Donné was fortunate to receive generous grants from both public institutions and foundations to sustain our studio, archival, and educational programming.
The Getty’s Paper Project enabled Dieu Donné to host the forthcoming Beyond the Substrate: Hand Papermaking Seminar for Print Curators, a week-long intensive workshop for 10 emerging and mid-career print and drawings curators, with the goal of sharing knowledge about hand papermaking and the role it plays in contemporary art.
The Windgate Foundation supported Dieu Donné’s Paper Institute and its educational partnerships with museums across the United States. This funding enabled the launch of the "Partnering with Museums for Education" program, which included three events at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The program aims to share the art of hand papermaking with university students and the general public.
Since 2018, The West Bay View Foundation has granted one visual artist trained in hand papermaking a yearly fellowship opportunity. Each fellow studies with Dieu Donné master papermakers, gaining practical experience working in a professional papermaking studio.
As recipients of Hauser & Wirth’s 2024 In-House Archiving Program, Dieu Donné’s nearly 50-year archive of documents and ephemera is in the process of being cataloged, digitized and properly organized.
The John Ben Snow Memorial Trust once again sponsored a paid studio intern at Dieu Donné to gain experience working in a professional papermaking studio.
All artistic and educational programs at Dieu Donné are made possible with public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council; and Foundation support including: the Adjuvant Foundation, Lily Auchincloss Foundation, Inc., The New York Community Trust, Jockey Hollow Foundation, IFPDA Foundation, and the Wolf Kahn Foundation along with in-kind support from Material for the Arts and major individual support.
Thank you for being a part of our community
Dieu Donné relies on the generosity of our friends, members, and supporters to continue to foster creative progress within the niche field of hand papermaking.
A donation from you would help us to continue this legacy next year, and for many years to come.
