Lab Grant

The Lab Grant Program is a residency program designed to provide mid-career artists with the opportunity to work in-depth for an extended period of time at Dieu Donné in order to produce landmark work in hand papermaking.

The Lab Grant Program artist for 2013 is B. Wurtz.

Past Lab Grant artists have included James Siena (2011/2012), Ann Hamilton (2010), E. V. Day (2008/2009), Jon Kessler (2007/2008), Ursula von Rydingsvard (2007/2008), Tony Fitzpatrick (2006/2007), Do-Ho Suh (2006/2007) Kate Shepherd (2005/2006), Mel Kendrick (2005/2006), Arturo Herrera (2004), Jessica Stockholder (2004), Glenn Ligon (2003), Bob Cottingham (2002), Polly Apfelbaum (2002), Jim Hodges (2001), Dorothea Rockburne (2001), Melvin Edwards (2000), and Jane Hammond (2000).

The Dieu Donné Art and Gallery Committee select the Lab Grant artists from nominations by outside advisors and annually two artists are invited for residencies. Each artist will receive a $1,200 honorarium, twelve days of full technical assistance on the main wet-floor studio, all papermaking materials and the option to present an exhibition at the Dieu Donné Gallery. The production of mature and inspired work in the hand papermaking medium is a desired outcome of granting space and expertise over an extended period to Lab Grant artists. Exhibitions and interpretive public programs such as artist talks and studio demonstrations will enhance public understanding of the work and the medium of hand papermaking. In addition, the Lab Grant residencies are documented in a publication series that is circulated to art reference libraries, museums, galleries, and not-for-profit artists' organizations.
