Mission
Founded in 1976, Dieu Donné is a non-profit artist workspace dedicated
to the creation, promotion, and preservation of contemporary art in the
hand papermaking process. In support of this mission, Dieu Donné
collaborates with artists and partners with the professional visual arts
community. The studio, gallery, and archive are housed in a 7,000 square
foot ground-floor facility at 315 West 36th Street in Manhattan.
Dieu Donné offers a limited number of internship opportunities
for students and artists interested in one of four areas (outlined below).
Enrollment is continuous, though four-month or full-semester sessions
are preferred. All internships are unpaid, however participants will earn
credits toward classes and studio time at Dieu Donné. University
or high school credit may also be available through participating institutions.
Art Administration
Interns will work with the Program Manager and Executive Director in a professional
environment with a strong focus on development, programming, and communications.
Candidates will assist in the research, coordination, and execution of
all three aforementioned areas. Duties also include event planning, general
office maintenance and organization, as well as the development and distribution
of related materials. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest
in contemporary art, experience in arts administration or management,
possess excellent writing and research skills, and be well versed in a
number of software applications on a Macintosh system.
Archive
Interns will work with the Archivist and Gallery Director on all
aspects of maintaining a thirty-year archive of art in handmade paper,
including large two- and three-dimensional works. Duties include database,
slide registry, and library management; documentation of works, the organization
and preservation of a vast number of works and related materials in many
formats. The ideal candidate will be extremely well-organized, work meticulously
in a sensitive environment, willing to maintain long-term projects, and
be well versed in a number of software applications on a Macintosh system.
Gallery
Interns will work with the Gallery Director on all aspects of exhibition
production, research, installation, promotional materials, and maintenance
of a unique, storefront exhibition space. Candidates will also assist
in the handling and preparation of artwork, development of exhibition
materials, and interface with the public. The ideal candidate will have
a strong interest in contemporary art, knowledge of art history, be detail-oriented,
possess excellent writing and research skills, and be well versed in a
number of software applications on a Macintosh system.
Studio
Interns will work with an experienced Artistic and Studio staff in a
unique collaborative environment through the creation of artist
projects, the production of handmade paper, as well as the maintenance,
organization, and preparation of the studio, machinery, and supplies.
The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in contemporary art, be
detail-oriented, work well with their hands, be highly motivated and
able to work independently on complex studio projects.
General Requirements
- We require at least one day per week (11 am–6 pm) for four months or
a full semester. Candidates are strongly encouraged to participate more
than one day per week if possible.
- Ideal candidates will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and
comfortable within a working studio and office environment.
- Prior experience with hand papermaking is preferable for Studio
interns, though not required.
- Prior experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Photoshop and
Illustrator, ArtBase or FileMaker is preferable.
