Mission
Founded in 1976, Dieu Donné is a non-profit artist workspace dedicated to the creation, promotion, and preservation of contemporary art in the hand papermaking process. The organization's primary programs are devoted to working with mid-career and emerging artists, introducing them to the creative possibilities in hand papermaking and resulting in the creation of innovative work that engages in the dialogue of the greater contemporary art world. Our Exhibition, Education and Publishing programs along with our Archive of Paper Art support these primary programs.

Dieu Donné offers a limited number of internship opportunities for students and artists interested in learning aspects of working in a non-profit contemporary artist workspace. The internship program follows the academic calendar with three cycles (Fall, Spring, Summer), and full-semester internships are preferred. The deadline for internship application is April 19, 2013 with interviews for successful candidates to be scheduled thereafter.

Internships are unpaid, however participants earn credit toward studio time and classes at Dieu Donné. University or High School credit can be accommodated for participating institutions.

Internship areas:
Candidates are allowed to participate in more than one area of the organization.

Art Administration/Gallery
Interns will see how a non-profit artist workspace operates from the inside by working closely with the Program Manager, Executive Director and supporting staff. Primary areas of responsibility include programming, communications, promotion, as well as exhibition production and installation. Candidates will assist in the research, coordination, and execution of both the gallery and administration areas. Duties also include general office maintenance and organization, as well as the development and distribution of related materials. Candidates will also assist in the handling, preparation and delivery of artwork, and interface with the public. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in contemporary art, possess excellent writing and research skills, and be well versed in a number of Macintosh software applications.

Studio
Interns will learn the workings of a fully equipped papermaking studio by working closely with our experienced Artistic and Studio staff in a unique collaborative environment. Primary areas of responsibility include the maintenance, organization, and preparation of the studio, machinery, and supplies. Possible areas of assistance include aiding in the creation of artist projects and the production of handmade paper. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in contemporary art, work well with their hands, have some studio and art handling experience, and be able to work independently on complex studio projects.

General Requirements
  • At least 2 full days per week (11 am–6 pm, not negotiable) for a full-semester or equivalent. Candidates are allowed to participate in more than one area of the organization. There will also be occasional weekend and evening hours to assist with workshops, exhibition openings, and special events.
  • Ideal candidates will be highly motivated, able to work independently, detail-oriented, and comfortable within a casual but professional studio and office environment.
  • Prior experience with hand papermaking is preferable for Studio interns, though not required.
  • Prior experience with Mac OS, Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Dreamweaver, and ArtBase or FileMaker is preferable for Gallery/Admin interns.
